The title of Touché Amoré’s fourth album, Stage Four, holds a double meaning: it refers to both the record’s release order & the fourth stage of cancer. Vocalist Jeremey Bolm grieved his mother’s passing to the disease while writing the record. The same year the record dropped I had lost my father to cancer. The opening track, Flowers and You, evoked an emotional response I can’t put into words. I tend to skip it when it comes onto shuffle now. Bolm later said he couldn’t write material like this anymore, it wasn’t healthy for him or the audience. This is their best work—a true masterpiece of the genre—it’s haunting nature so powerful I visit it less then their other material.
