My 2003 peers dick rode Comeback Kid, with lyrics like “I don’t need a crew to validate myself” filling MySpace blurbs for years. Back then, I saw them as a gateway band, deluded in my belief that I had outgrown their introductory hardcore-sound. I would eventually become a CBK dick rider myself; their later releases becoming some of my favorite bangers. However, it took me twenty years to give their debut a proper listen, finally copping the anniversary pressing of Turn It Around. My initial take was correct in that it was a stepping stone record, but I was wrong to dismiss it. I’ve come to realize that it was an essential blueprint for what was to come—deserving of all the praise it got on release.
